Trim & Baseboard Calculator
Estimate trim or baseboard stock from room perimeter, openings, cutting allowance and available stock length.
Estimate trim or baseboard from room perimeter, subtract openings that will not receive trim, then add a cutting allowance and convert to whole stock lengths.
Complex rooms, closets, returns, scarf joints and pattern matching can change practical waste. Confirm available stock lengths before purchasing.
How the trim estimate works
Net trim length = room perimeter − openings with no trim. Planned trim = net trim length × (1 + cutting allowance ÷ 100). Stock pieces = planned trim ÷ stock length, rounded up.
Worked example
A 12 ft × 10 ft room has a 44 ft perimeter. Subtract a 3 ft opening to get 41 ft. With a 10% planning allowance the target becomes 45.1 ft. With 8 ft stock lengths, divide by 8 and round up to whole pieces.
When this result is useful
Use this for a first-pass baseboard or simple trim purchase plan when you know the room perimeter and the stock length sold by your supplier.
Important limitations
A linear-foot total does not design the joints. Long uninterrupted walls, scarf joints, inside/outside corners, returns, closets, profile matching and available stock lengths can change the practical piece count.
