A practical five-step method for planning home repairs before you spend money or remove materials.

FixLume is built for the planning stage of home improvement: the point where a small amount of measuring, diagnosis and sequencing can prevent a large amount of rework. We focus on projects that benefit from clear decisions rather than dramatic “hacks”.

The five-step FixLume method

  1. Describe the symptom or finish condition. Write what is actually happening or what “done” needs to look like.
  2. Measure the conditions. Dimensions, substrate, moisture exposure, light, access and existing materials can change the correct method.
  3. Check dependencies. A finish repair should not happen before the leak, movement or failed substrate underneath it is resolved.
  4. Plan quantities and sequence. Convert measurements into purchase units and include drying, curing, delivery and cleanup time.
  5. Set a stop condition. Unknown structural conditions, live electrical work, gas, significant water damage and hazardous materials are examples of situations that can move a project beyond sensible DIY.
