Flooring Calculator

Estimate flooring cartons from measured area, an editable cutting allowance and the coverage printed on the exact carton.

Enter the rectangular floor dimensions, your planned cutting allowance and the exact coverage printed on one carton. For irregular rooms, calculate each rectangle separately and add the areas first.

Enter your floorThe carton estimate will appear here.

The allowance is a planning input, not a universal rule. Pattern, room shape, board dimensions, defects and manufacturer instructions can change the appropriate quantity.

How the carton estimate works

Formula

Planned coverage = room area × (1 + cutting allowance ÷ 100). Cartons = planned coverage ÷ coverage per carton, rounded up to a whole carton.

Worked example

A 15.25 ft × 11.75 ft rectangle is about 179.2 sq ft. At an 8% planning allowance, that becomes about 193.5 sq ft. If one carton covers 23.64 sq ft, divide and round up to the next whole carton.

When this result is useful

Use the tool after measuring the room and identifying the exact carton coverage. For L-shaped rooms, split the floor into rectangles, add their areas, then apply the chosen allowance once to the combined area.

Important limitations

There is no universal waste percentage. Pattern direction, board dimensions, diagonal layouts, defects, room shape, transitions and manufacturer instructions can change the practical amount. The calculator also does not determine whether the substrate is suitable for the flooring system.
